Every Little Counts

Towards the end of the year and around new Year time people tend to do this one thing around their big goals or projects…..

They give up! They tell themselves there is no point in making a tiny bit of progress when they can just start again or start fresh in the new year, or next month, or later in the year when things are better.

BUT here is the thing. When you do that, what you are really doing is putting off starting altogether! Then it becomes even harder to start the thing that you wanted to do in the first place.

SO how do you get around this?

By starting small.

If for example you want to tone up – you don’t go to the gym and lift the heaviest weight from day one! You start by going to the gym and getting to know the space. By learning what classes are available and what the gym looks like. Once you know the basics you can then try out different classes and equipment to see what you like doing. The key is to not force yourself into a workout that you think will quickly help you tone up. That’s a recipe for trouble!

It can be difficult when you feel like you’re not getting closer to your goal or target but here’s one thing I want you to remember: small consistent steps will ALWAYS  add up over time compared to bursts of work every once in a while. It’s the tortoise over the hare type philosophy.

One thing to be careful of is downplaying your progress as not big enough or not good enough. Making progress, however small, is a very important thing. A year of 5-minute daily workouts is better and more consistent than a super intense workouts every once in a while. Our brains like to tell us “5 minutes is nothing, it won’t achieve anything, how will this work?” But when you keep going, those 5 minutes really really really add up.

When it comes to working towards big projects the smaller the steps you have the easier it becomes to keep going. You’re essentially creating stepping stones to help you get from where you are now to where you want to be in a given timeframe.

Small steps apply to every area of life. When it comes to saving you can start by saving up spare change and putting it in a jar. Then empty that jar at the bank once a month. Then as the balance grows you can start saving more each month and having regular check points.

When it comes to cleaning you could break down a room into lots of tiny areas and do one each time there is an ad break on your favourite show. Just to clarify when I say small I mean SMALL. For example: one area that I clean in a few minutes would be the bathroom sink then the next section would be the sink taps and then the counter area, then the toilet then the radiator and so on, inside each 5 minute section.

Starting small is how you get started when you have a big project to work on or if you’ve given up on something and want to get back into the swing of things.
